Learning to read is a big job, and one way kids become strong readers is by exposure and practice. I love giving my kids books that empower them to feel like readers, as well as books that they can take home to read to their family. This valentine emergent reader is perfect for February, and learning number and color words too!
At this time of year, my kids are working hard to master those color and number words! We practice through games, songs, and more. They are getting to be stronger readers every day!
One of my favorite things to do is to give my kids authentic practice with the words by creating books that use them. This ties in meaning to the words and puts them in context – helping them stick even more.
This valentine emergent reader works on number words to six and several color words, while also incorporating sight words I and see.
The repetitive text is great for readers who are starting to decode, but need to gain confidence in their reading or build up sight word recognition.
It is super easy to print and prepare- just print double sided, cut in half and staple – and you have 2 books!
Fun bonus to try – eat candy hearts after you read and while you color! Seriously, so fun!

More Emergent Readers
We LOVE emergent readers and have several that we use! Some of my favorites for kindergarten are our CVC word family readers, which work on short vowel word families and are perfect for beginning readers.
