Spooky Halloween Sun Catcher Kid Craft

This spooky Halloween sun catcher craft is a fun multi-step project! Each sun catcher is unique and the project is an effective way for students to explore a variety of art materials. These fun sun catchers would be perfect for adding a bit of spooktacular decor to your home or classroom!

Spooky Halloween Sun Catcher Kid Craft

This Halloween Sun Catcher is so fun and easy to make! You may already have all the materials needed for this project on-hand.

To get started, first gather your materials:

• Paper plate
• Black washable paint
• Washable black felt tip marker – fine point
• Coffee filter
• Watercolor paints
• Glue
• Paint brush

How to Make the Halloween Sun Catcher

Before you begin, an adult should cut out the center of a paper plate. If this is a classroom project, you may find it helpful to ask a few parent volunteers to cut out paper plate centers. Be sure the outer rim of the plate is intact.

Next, invite your students to use black washable paint to cover the paper plate rim. Set it aside to dry completely. Alternatively, you could use black paper plates to skip this painting step.

While the plate is drying, students can begin using watercolor paints on a coffee filter.

Encourage your students to cover the entire coffee filter with bright watercolor paint. Coffee filters will hold up to a lot of water, so they are perfect for a beginner’s watercolor project!

Set the painted coffee filter aside to dry completely.

Once the paper plates and coffee filters are completely dry, it is time for the next step. Flip the paper plate over, and apply a thin layer of glue around the inner circle, as shown below.

Next, add the painted coffee filter on top. Allow the glue to dry completely.

It’s time to decorate! Invite your students to use washable black felt tip markers to lightly draw spooky details. Some of our favorites are webs and spiders.

Proudly display your spooky sun catcher in a sunny window in your home or classroom. These would also be fun to make as a decoration for an upcoming Halloween party!
