Crossword puzzles are fun for all ages, and these simple picture crossword puzzles are just right for kids to stretch their brains and practice their spelling and writing.

These picture crossword puzzles are perfect for early readers and writers! They make a great work work activity for school or home!

I’ve been a huge fan of crossword puzzles since I can remember.  I loved solving the simple ones with pictures and was really thrilled when I could move to the “grown up ones,” even though that meant making up most of the words in the beginning (and for a long time). Let’s say I was adding my creativity to it and saw different ways they could be solved.

These simple picture crossword puzzles are great for little ones who are just getting started as they have simple “key pictures”- mostly animals all kids know and a few fruits and vegetables. They also go the same direction (across) which is helpful for younger students. All puzzles have a secret word kids will uncover once they solve the puzzle.

Worried your kids don’t know how to spell the words? I recommend letting them write the sounds they hear, even if they are incorrect. Phonetic spelling is an important part of learning to read and write! If you wish, you could create a word bank by writing the words on the page and letting them copy the words – up to you!

I do recommend you laminate these, as this way they will last a lot longer. You can use dry erase markers on the laminated sheets, which will allow the kids to solve the puzzles again after a while. These are great to add to your word work center, or as an activity for early finishers.

Now all that is left is for you to print these and give them to your kids or students to solve!

These are great! I love having fun puzzles for my children to practice their skills. I just have one question. One the second page, is the last picture a spider? Is the secret word supposed to be dinner? I just wanted to check. Thanks again for these fun practice sheets!

Hi Larry! We are happy to hear you are enjoying the puzzles. To answer your question…the picture is a spider and the word would also be spider as well. Have fun!
