Pencil Initial Sounds Match

Going back to school means lots of school supplies!  As a parent and a teacher, it’s one of my favorite times of the year.  Piling all of the boxes of crayons, pencils, glue, scissors, and reams of paper into the shopping cart makes me happy.  The brand new supplies at the beginning of the year make learning so inviting.  Introducing some of the learning centers in my classroom includes how to use the school supplies found there.

Our printable Pencil Initial Sounds Match activity includes a set of 26 clipboards and pencils.  Each clipboard has a picture on it and each pencil has a letter of the alphabet on it.

Print the clipboards and pencils out. Laminate and cut apart.  If you are not laminating, print on cardstock for extra durability during play.  Cut the clipboards and pencils apart on the gray dotted lines.

Now that the activity is prepped, it’s time to play and learn!

Setting up this initial sound activity works best on a table or the floor.  Spread the clipboards with the pictures on them so that each can be seen.

For my preschoolers, I will tape the clipboard cards onto the table.  This allows the little learners to reach across the table without moving the cards around.

Put all of the pencil alphabet cards into a basket or tray.  Pull one pencil out at a time and identify the letter and the sound it makes.  Look for the picture on the clipboard that has the same initial sound as the letter.

For example, if you pull an R pencil card out of the basket, match it up with the clipboard with the rainbow on it.  If a Z pencil card is pulled, match it with the zebra on the clipboard.

Continue until each clipboard has a matching pencil on it.

A great thing about this printable Pencil Initial Sounds Match activity is that you can also make a memory game.  Print 2 sets of alphabet pencil cards.  Cut them apart and flip them over to play memory by matching letters together.
