With summer nearly here, ice cream is definitely on the brain! Since most kids love ice cream, I love to harness its power into fun learning activities like these 0-10 ten frame ice cream puzzles. This free Ice Cream Ten Frame Number Match Game is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners to work on beginning counting and subitizing!

This free Ice Cream Ten Frame Number Match is so fun for preschoolers and kindergarteners to work on counting to 10 and subitizing!

Ice Cream Ten Frame Number Match

I like to play with small groups when I first introduce a new game, and this Ice Cream Ten Frame Number Match was definitely a hit.

Of course, we had to share our favorite ice cream flavors before we could get started, and it was decided that these green cones were all mint flavored.

To prep, I printed out the cones and scoops (below) and laminated them so that I can reuse them each year.

Then I cut them out and placed them in a small basket (you could put them in a zip top bag, too) for kids to play with during math workshop time.

This activity includes cones with numerals 0-10 on them and ice cream scoops with ten frames to match.

How to Play

To begin the game, we ordered the ice cream cones from 0-10. Then we placed all the scoops in a basket and took turns picking one up and identifying the number shown in the ten frame.

After identifying how many, it was time to match it up with its cone!

When my students felt comfortable with the game I added it to our math centers. This is always a super popular activity!

Place the ice cream cones in number order, pick a ten frame scoop, and pair it with its matching cone.

This number match game works on beginning counting, but also subitizing as well (recognizing a set and identifying how many without counting).

So, while at first kids may need to point and count the dots “1….2….3,” with practice and time they will start to see 3 in a ten frame and instantly say, “3!”
