Learning to read words by sight is a big deal for early readers, and paves the way for continued reading success. After all, a HUGE portion of what read is made up of sight words! Before kids confidently read sight words as individual words in content, or next to unrelated words, it can be very helpful to have them practice matching up words that are the same. This builds confidence and recognition of the sight words in a fun, game-like way. This Valentine’s Day sight word game is played as a matching game, but the best part is – it is editable – use it with any words you wish!
Heart Match Editable Sight Word Game
This heart sight word match is super easy to set up, and what I love most is that I can use it with any sight words my kids need!
I simply type in 12 sight words that I want to work with on the red hearts, and then poof! They automatically populate onto the pink hearts for me.
I can easily make a copy of this sight word game for one group and save it to my computer, and then type in new words to make a completely different set for a different group of students!
You can use it with sight words like I did, but truthfully, you could use it with ABC’s, math facts, whatever you like!
When we played in a small group we first spread out the red hearts on the table and read the 12 sight words together.
Then, we took turns picking up a pink heart and looking for its red heart match, reading the sight word as we paired them up together.
This is also an excellent activity to add to Valentine’s Day literacy centers or to use for early finishers – so many possibilities with this fun and simple sight word match.
