There’s nothing better than a themed activity or game to get your students excited about practicing sight words! You can add plenty of heart-themed fun to your literacy centers this month with this free Valentine’s Day Sight Words Game. The best part is that this activity is EDITABLE so you can use it tons of different ways in the classroom!
*Pair with our Valentine’s Day Centers and Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten!

Editable Valentine’s Day Sight Words Game
Since this activity is editable, it is perfect for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade! You get to choose any 15 words that you’d like your students to focus on. Simply type them into the custom word generator and it will auto-populate the hearts and recording sheet for you!
Let’s get started with our simple supplies!

Supplies Needed:
- Seek a Sight Word recording sheet and printable hearts (download below)
- Crayons
- Optional – Valentine heart candy or heart-shaped manipulatives
Teacher Tip: Make this activity reusable by using the candy hearts or Valentine-themed manipulatives to cover up the hearts on the recording sheet instead of coloring.

Ways to Use this Activity
The possibilities are endless with an editable activity like this one! You can choose to use Valentine-themed words, spelling words, high-frequency words, Dolch words, sight words, etc. The list goes on and on!
Below are some of my favorite ways to use this Valentine’s Day Sight Words Game with my students!
Seek a Sight Word Literacy Center
This activity is perfect as an easy-prep literacy center! Start by downloading the editable file and typing in your word list. Then you just need to print, laminate, and cut apart the Valentine word hearts.
Place the Seek a Sight Word recording sheet in your center with crayons and the sight word hearts.
To play, students draw a heart from the pile, read it, and find and color it on the recording sheet. The activity continues until all of the sight word heart cards have been read and colored in.

Seek a Sight Word Partner Race
This variation is played similarly but in pairs. Two players share a recording sheet and each picks one color crayon that is their designated color.
Player #1 draws a card, reads the sight word, and colors it on the recording sheet. Player #2 then proceeds as player #1 did.
If a player doesn’t know the sight word, they must put the card at the bottom of the pile and they miss their turn. The player with the most hearts colored at the end of the game is the winner!

Valentine’s Day Read the Room
Begin by posting the sight words heart cards around the classroom. Next, with the recording sheet attached to a clipboard, students search for the sight words and color them in as they find them.
If this activity is used in pairs, then one child can hide the words around the classroom while his/her partner then finds them. Then they can switch so each child has a turn to hide and seek.
