February is coming up fast, which means it’s almost Groundhog Day! We celebrate this in our classroom in a variety of ways, including adding some Groundhog Day activities into our learning centers. This math facts center is a great Groundhog Day activity for working on addition and subtraction within 10 for Kindergarten and 1st grade students! It’s easy-prep, hands-on, and your kids are sure to have fun.
Groundhog Math Facts Groundhog Day Activity
This Groundhog Day math facts center is simple to prep, and the best part is it is like two centers in one!
You can choose whether to play the addition to 10 version, subtraction within 10 version, or both of them mixed together.
Plus, there are printable number lines included to use if your students need some assistance solving the problems.
Just print, laminate (to keep the pieces sturdy) and you are ready to play! When you are done, just store the pieces in a Ziploc bag for next year.
Since we were playing as a review, we used all of the pieces in both the addition and the subtraction set.
We spread out the groundhog numbers so that we could quickly see them, and piled up the hole and dirt equations in a pile to pull from.
We took turns pulling a hole and reading the equation, solving it, and then finding its matching groundhog. If we needed to, we used the number line to help us out.
We kept pulling equations and matching them up until they had all been solved!
