St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hat Craft

Children can make these little leprechaun hats themselves, or grown-ups can quickly craft up several of these to gift to the kids as a fun surprise. You may even already have everything on hand that you need to make this super fun craft in your home or classroom.

I just love simple and festive crafts!

Materials Needed:

  • Cardboard tube (empty paper towel rolls)
  • Cardboard sheets (empty cereal boxes work well for this)
  • Green tempera paint and paintbrush
  • Ribbon or washi tape
  • Shamrock stickers
  • School glue
  • Scissors
  • Gold foil-wrapped candies
This activity is easy to make with recycled materials like cardboard tubes and cardboard cereal boxes.

Directions

To begin, cut the cardboard tube into 2-inch lengths. Next, on the cardboard sheets, trace the bottom of a large cup, and cut out the circle.

If you are working with a large group of kids, I recommend doing these steps ahead of time, so the kids can go straight to the painting and gluing.

Once the cardboard is cut, invite the kids to paint the inside and outside of each cardboard tube as well as both sides of the cardboard circle. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Once the cardboard is cut, invite the kids to paint the inside and outside of each cardboard tube as well as both sides of the cardboard circle.

When the paint has completely dried, it is time to build your little leprechaun hat!

Invite the kids to glue some ribbon or add some washi tape to the bottom edge of the cardboard tube. Next, use glue to attach the cardboard tube to the center of the cardboard circle. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Lastly, add a shamrock sticker to your little leprechaun hat, and fill the hat with gold foil-wrapped candies to give to a friend for good luck!

After assembling the hat, add some gold foil-wrapped candies to the inside and you are done!
