Somewhere over the rainbow, you can find gold? I have a thing for rainbows and so does my four year old. She has been able to say her colors in rainbow order since she was 2 and draws them any chance she can get. She even requested a rainbow birthday party this year which is perfect because her birthday is in March. When I think of March I think rainbows, leprechauns, and pots of gold which is what inspired this free Pot of Gold Syllable Counting Activity!

Pot of Gold Syllable Counting Activity
This activity is a hands-on way for your kids to work on counting the syllables in words! Counting syllables can be a tricky concept for early learners to master, but is essential for helping them learn to read and write. Breaking words into chunks can help children sound out words easier and read words more accurately.
Let’s grab our supplies and get started!
Supplies Needed:
- Laminator and laminating sheets
- Scissors
- Gold coins or yellow play dough balls
- Pot of Gold Syllable Counting mat, rainbow cards, and recording sheet (download below)
How to Prep
To begin, you will first print and laminate the Pot of Gold Syllable Counting mat and the rainbow picture cards. Cut out the rainbow cards, mix them up, and place them in a pile next to the pot of gold mat.
Grab some gold coins and you’re ready to play!
How to Play
Students will pick a rainbow card and identify the picture on the card.
They will then use the gold coins and move one onto each of the coin spots on the mat, adding one coin per syllable they say/count in the word.
Use the recording sheet provided to record the number of syllables in each word.
There are cards for one, two, three, and four syllables. You can use them all or just a few depending on the levels in your home or classroom.
You can also use the recording sheet as a stand-alone activity for extra review.
Continue counting syllables until all cards have been completed!
