Holidays are always a blast to celebrate in the classroom! Even if you don’t have a big party, you can still do holiday themed activities with your students. Since St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, I have a fun leprechaun themed activity to practice reading and writing CVC words. This free Leprechaun Write the Room CVC Word Activity is a fun way to get children up and moving around the room while they learn!

*Pair this with our St. Patrick’s Day Writing Center Activities!

Leprechaun Write the Room CVC Word Activity

Write the Room activities are a great way to get the wiggles out while also being engaged and learning! You can choose to do this as a whole group activity or as a reading center activity with just a few students at a time.

This activity includes 12 colorful Leprechaun Write the Room cards, a recording sheet, and an answer key. It focuses on sounding out and spelling CVC words.

Print the cards and recording sheet and give your students a clipboard and fun writing tool to get started.

How to “Write the Room”

Before you start, make sure to hang up all of the picture cards in different spots in the classroom!

Begin the activity by giving each student a clipboard or hard-covered book and a recording sheet. I like to give students fun writing tools for this type of activity.

Students will walk around the room looking for the cards with the little leprechauns on them. Once they find a card, they look at the picture. Then they sound out the CVC word and write the word on their recording sheet next to the matching number on the leprechaun.

Once they find all 12 cards and write all the words down, they are finished!

Students walk around the room looking for the cards with the leprechauns on them and writing the words on their recording sheet.

If using this as a whole group activity, I suggest that you have a “rule” that no more than 2 students can be at a card at a time. This will eliminate any pushing or shoving or the entire class at one card.

I simply tell my students that if there are already 2 students at a card, they can either stand back and wait patiently or find another card.

This activity also works great in your literacy centers! Just add the cards to a small basket and have students draw a card and write the word on their recording sheet.

You can also add the cards to a basket and have students draw a card and write the word on their recording sheet.

This CVC Word Write the Room will be the perfect addition to your St. Patrick’s Day themed learning in your classroom this March!
