Mitten Match Beginning Sounds Game
In this beginning sounds game, the mitten theme and hands-on matching makes it an engaging choice – and one of my students’ favorite winter activities! Quick to prep and easy to play, it is sure to be a hit for any student working on this skill!
How to Prep
This game is simple to prepare, which is perfect for busy teachers or parents!
Simply print out and cut the mitten cards (download below). Then laminate them for sturdiness and repeated use.
If you print them on cardstock, they will be thick enough that you can make them self-checking by writing the correct letter on the back of the picture cards. This is of course optional, but can be great if you are using this as a center so that students can check their work!

How to Play
Playing the game is simple and fun! I use this game in small groups with my students who are working on this skill, but you could also use it as a center or individual activity!
First, my students grab a picture mitten, saying the name of the picture and stressing its initial sound. Then, they look for the letter that represents that sound and put the mittens together to make a pair!
We keep playing until all of the mittens have been matched!
