Learning to read is no easy thing! This beginning sounds game gives students some fun, winter themed practice with learning to identify beginning sounds.
Quick to prep and easy to play, it is sure to be a hit for any student working on this skill!
Preparing the Game:
This game is simple to prepare, which is perfect for busy teachers or parents!
Simply print out the mitten cards (below) and laminate them for sturdiness.
If you print them on cardstock, they will be thick enough that you can make them self checking by writing the letter on the back of the picture cards. This is of course optional, but can be great if you are having this as a center so that students can check their work!
Playing the game is simple and fun! I used the game in small groups with my students who are working on this skill, but you could also use it as a center or individual activity!
First, my students grabbed a picture mitten, saying the name of the picture and stressing it’s initial sound. Then, they looked for the letter that represents that sound and put the mittens together to make a pair!
We kept playing until all of the mittens a-z had been matched!
