Mini-Pumpkin Turkeys Thanksgiving Craft

With November upon us, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, but you may still have a lot of pumpkins left over from Halloween festivities! Mini-pumpkins are always a favorite of mine for classroom use because they are the perfect size for Kindergarteners. These mini-pumpkin turkeys are an adorable (and tasty) Thanksgiving craft to make and send home with your students!

Mini-Pumpkin Turkeys Thanksgiving Craft

My favorite way to use these super cute mini-pumpkin turkeys is to set them on these fun Thanksgiving placemats during our classroom party but they also make great centerpieces!

To get ready to make this fun and easy Thanksgiving craft, you will need to gather up your supplies.

Supplies Needed:

• Mini or small pumpkins
• Suckers – Dum Dums or Tootsie Pops (can’t use candy at school? Make them with feathers instead!)
• 1 piece red felt
• 1 piece orange felt
• Googly eyes
• Glue (tacky glue works well for this)
• Small phillips head screwdriver

Time to Create!

Are you ready to make some pumpkin turkeys?

First, cut out 3 triangle shaped beaks from the orange felt, and cut out 3 wattles from the red felt. Just make the sizes of these match the pumpkin sizes.

I would show kids how to draw their own with a Sharpie and cut them out, or you could draw it and let them cut them out – but the goal is to have them participate in this as much as possible.

Yes, you may have some giant beaks as big as the pumpkin – but that is part of the fun and what makes them unique!

After you glue the eyes, beaks, and wattles on each pumpkin, it’s time to poke the holes in the top. This is where you will want adult help.

I recommend not doing this activity whole class (can someone say circus?). But instead, work in small groups and pull kids over to make their pumpkin turkeys.

On the top of each pumpkin behind the stems, poke 4-5 holes about an inch apart with your screwdriver.

You could let kids help with the holes once you get them started – don’t be afraid of letting them use the screwdriver if you show them how to do it appropriately!

Now comes the best part and what is sure to be every kid’s favorite! Once the holes are in there, push a sucker into each hole about halfway down the sucker stick.
