Letter Match Sensory Bin

One of our favorite ways to extend a favorite book, is to pair it with a sensory bin activity! We recently fell in love with an alphabet book from the library and decided to create a sensory bin to go with it. A sensory activity before, during, or after a story enhances engagement and helps bring an old book back to life. This Letter Match Sensory Bin can be adapted to a variety of books or even used without one!

*Pair this with our Alphabet Centers and Activities for Pre-K and Kindergarten!

Letter Match Sensory Bin

The story we used for this activity is LMNO Peas by Keith Baker. It is perfect for letter recognition and letter sound knowledge.

The story includes the cutest little peas as characters, so we mixed up our usual sensory bin with dried split peas! It made for a much different sensory experience and the color was so fun too!

Sensory Bin

In a small wooden tray, I poured the dried split peas over magnet letters. I only included one of each letter to use in a matching activity.

Matching Activity

I have a lot of old letter stickers filling up our craft cabinet that worked well for this activity!

Using a blank piece of paper, I placed letter stickers A through Z in a random order.

As we read through the story, I had my daughter search for each letter. Once she found it, we talked about the name and its sound and she matched it to the correct sticker spot.

This was such a fun way to extend our story time! Next time, I will use lowercase letter stickers to match with uppercase magnet letters to make it more difficult.

Now it is your turn to get creative with your favorite stories! You’ll be surprised at how engaged  your child or students will be when you mix up a traditional story time. We are thinking of a fun activity to pair with 123 Peas also by Keith Baker next!
