As it nears the Christmas season, I am ready to brainstorm some fun and festive learning activities to incorporate into our day. Learning to write is definitely a process, and many kids need further practice with various writing strokes and the fine motor control needed for them. This free Gingerbread Pre-Writing Activity is a fun way to build up early writing skills and get us in the holiday spirit!

This free Gingerbread Pre-Writing Activity is a fun way to build up early writing skills and various writing strokes needed to form letters!

Gingerbread Pre-Writing Activity

Letters are made up of various strokes. There are straight lines, curves, slants, zig-zags, and more. These pre-writing strips give kids a fun way to practice those strokes and build up the skills needed to form letters.

To get this activity ready, I printed the pre-writing strips on cardstock (this helps them to not bend as easily) and then laminated them so that I could use them with dry erase markers. It also makes them reusable!

Laminate these pre-writing strips and kids can use dry erase markers to write with.

Ways to Use the Pre-Writing Activity

You could have your kids use thick markers to trace, or for kids who are ready for a more pencil-like grip, you could use fine point dry erase markers.

If using these pre-writing strips as a one-time-use activity, we like to use fun writing utensils like skinny markers and colored pencils to trace the lines. This adds an extra element of fun!

Now it’s time to grab a strip and help the gingerbread man get to his house by tracing the lines!

These pre-writing activity give kids a fun way to practice curves, slants, and straight lines.

No matter how you use this pre-writing activity in your classroom it is sure to be a hit this holiday season!
