Learning to write doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t start with the ABC’s. Before kids can form and write letters, they need to practice using writing tools and making basic writing strokes. These free pre-writing printables give kids practice with common strokes that are found in letters, and can be used in many different ways!

Pre-Writing Printables
I like to start the school year with these pre-writing printables either as morning work or at the beginning of writers workshop. You could also send them home for practice or use them as centers or in small groups.
Some of my students may already write, however, I find that practice with common strokes can really help their neatness and letter formation down the road.
We trace curves, diagonals, zig-zags, and more! There are 13 pages of pre-writing printables!
We use crayons, markers – any writing tool will work.
While pencils are of course the most common writing tool, I find that with these types of practice pages, it is far more engaging for kids to use a variety of writing tools such as skinny markers, crayons, or other fun items that are used only for “special activities” like this.
Plus, they are still getting practice with pencil grip, but it is just more fun to see marker or crayon strokes show up than pencil! They also love making the pages colorful.
For some added fun, and to save on paper, I put these pre-writing printables in dry erase pocket sleeves. This lets me use them during centers or in small groups over and over again without needing endless copies!
My kids LOVE when I bring out the dry erase markers – for some reason that makes every task instantly more enjoyable!
