Gingerbread CVC Game

As we move forward in Kindergarten we are starting to work on building our fluency with CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. We have started with short a and will add in more vowels until we have mastered them all! The key to becoming fluent in reading these words is practice, practice, practice! My kids love to practice with holiday themed games like this free Gingerbread CVC Game. It’s perfect for this time of year to bring in a little festive fun, while learning to read too!

Gingerbread CVC Game
This game is great for early readers because it requires them to really listen for all of the sounds that make up the gingerbread CVC word pictures before looking for the corresponding word on the recording sheet.
It makes a super fun literacy center but it is also perfect for guided small groups or one on one instruction!
How to Prep
This Gingerbread CVC Word Game is so simple to prep! Just grab the recording sheet (download below), cut out your gingerbread men, and grab some crayons!
I recommend laminating the gingerbread cards for durability and repeated use. This is especially useful if placing this game in a literacy center.

Playing the Game
Set the gingerbread cards with CVC word pictures on them in a pile. I like to place them all in a small basket or grab bag for my students to draw from. Pick a card and say the name of the picture.
Shown below are the cards for sub and bed.
Next, find the matching CVC word on a gumdrop on the recording sheet. Color the gumdrop!

Up next – pick another gingerbread card, identify the picture, and color the next matching gumdrop! Continue until all of the gumdrops are colored in.
So simple and so fun!

Hi! Thank you so much for this great cvc activity! Would it be okay for me to include this in a round-up blog post I am working on that is specifically about learning phonics with Christmas/holiday activities? (Permission to link to your site and possibly use one of the images to show your activity?) I would be so honored, and of course I would leave a link to this page to tell people where it came from! 🙂
My blog is https://www.mythreereaders.com
Amy 🙂
Hi Amy,
Thank you so much for reaching out first and asking for permission. We’d be honored to have you feature our Gingerbread CVC Game. We just ask that per our terms of use, that you make sure to provide a link back and that all instructions and images remain on our site. You are allowed to use one image for your collage.
Thanks so much!
Do you have this CVC game for other time of the year as well?
