How to Play

I like to start out by introducing this game in small groups. This gives us a chance to identify the names of all of the pictures in case the students are not familiar with any of them.

In our small group, we take turns picking a waffle card, naming the picture, and identifying the beginning sound. The kids love when it is their turn to add the cards to our pocket chart so that everyone can see!

After we identify the beginning sound, we add the cards to a pocket chart.

When the students are familiar with the directions, I add the syrup letter cards to one basket and the waffle picture cards to another. Then I place the baskets in our literacy centers and the kids are ready to start pulling and matching.

Fun Tip: This game can also be played as a traditional “Memory” matching game. Place all the cards face down on a flat surface and kids can work in partners flipping cards and collecting matches!

Depending on the level of your students, you can decide if you want to use the uppercase letter cards, lowercase letter cards, or both!
