From my experience, teaching compound words is one of many fun literacy concepts to teach!  Kids really enjoy putting two words together to make a new word, or taking a word apart to make two new words.  For most children, this is a time when they become aware that there are parts to words. This free Apple Compound Words Printable is great to add to your plans this fall to practice this fun reading skill.

This activity is great to use for independent practice as a follow-up to a lesson on compound words. This could be a way to check comprehension of compound words and reinforce what they are.

It’s simple to prepare – just print out enough copies for your child or students, and with limited supplies you are ready to go!

We got busy cutting out the words from the word bank on the bottom. Some words are duplicates, which provides an extra challenge and really encourages kids to think, “Does this make sense?” before committing to gluing the word down.

First, we grabbed up “shelf.” Which word would make sense when combined with shelf? We checked using the process of elimination at first. “homeshelf?” No…. “Workshelf?” Still not quite right.

“Bookshelf!” Once we had settled on the answer – we glued the word underneath its apple match.

We kept reading and gluing until all of the words had been matched up.

Extend the Activity

  • Ask children to look around their house or classroom for compound words. You can record these on the back of the paper.
  • Make a list of at least 10 compound words to share with the class the next day at school (or home school).
  • Find long, tricky words in text and see if you can “chunk” them (find smaller words within the large word) to figure them out.
