Learning letters and their sounds are skills that we spend a lot of time working on in Kindergarten! We practice with songs, printables, read alouds, chants, and more. And it’s often the interactive lessons that engage students the most. These Alphabet Phonics Writing Activities will have your kids up and moving while working on writing sentences and labeling words that begin with A-Z!
Alphabet Phonics Writing Activities
This alphabet activity pack includes 8 word cards and 2 recording sheets for all the letters of the alphabet. Each word card also has a fun picture clue on it. Before cutting apart the word cards, be sure to laminate them so they are durable and reusable!
Both recording sheets are double-sided. The front side is for labeling the pictures and the back includes additional labeling PLUS a space for students to write or trace a sentence about one of the words on the page. Perfect for differentiation!
Ways to Use the Alphabet Activities
“Write the Room” activities are a favorite in our classroom because it means the kids can get up and move while still working on important literacy skills!
When using this activity as an alphabet “Write the Room,” I start by choosing which letters I want the students to work on and posting the word cards all around the room. Then the kids walk around with the recording sheet on a clipboard, labeling the pictures as they find them.
You can also choose to have one set of students hide the cards around the room while the other kids search for them and write the words. When they are done, they can switch so each student gets a turn to “hide” and “seek!”
This activity can also be used as an alphabet literacy center!
For this version of play, I set out the recording sheets at a table with the word cards. Students simply pick a card and write the word. I have even added the word cards to a sensory bin for an extra fun, hands-on twist!
Teacher Tip: Make this a reusable activity by slipping the recording sheets into a dry erase pocket sleeve. Your kiddos can write the words with dry erase markers, erase, and write again for tons of alphabet fun!
Differentiated Recording Sheets
The recording sheets are also versatile and can be used multiple ways to meet the needs of all your students. Each recording sheet comes with a front page with five empty boxes where kids can pick a card and label the pictures. Print double-sided for extra writing practice!
There are two options for the back page. The first option includes 3 additional pictures for students to label and a pre-written sentence that they can trace.
The second option includes 3 pictures for labeling and blank lines. Students ready for an extra challenge can choose a word from the page and write their very own sentence on the lines.
This is a great way to inspire confidence and creativity and also tons of fun to read the sentences!
Plus, at the end of the file, all of the word cards also come in black and white for an ink-saving option!
