Alphabet Magnet Match

Alphabet magnets are a staple in my classroom. There are so many varieties to choose from, but I tend to typically grab the color coded ones with the red vowels (they are great for when you start to build words). However, any letter magnets will do for this activity!

I also have a lot of cookie sheets on hand for magnet letter activities. The dollar store always has them in stock, and you can’t beat the price!

Armed with my alphabet magnets and cookie sheets, I simply printed out the alphabet printables (download below) and I had a literacy activity all set in almost no time!

Just grab some letter magnets, cookie sheets, and the free alphabet printables for this easy-prep literacy activity.

How to Play

To begin, I started with the lowercase alphabet printable. For this one, we used lowercase magnets and the goal was to simply match up the letters. The letters go in order, which is an additional teaching opportunity to start exploring alphabetical order as well as letter recognition.

When I use this in a small group, we pick a letter magnet and say its name and sound before placing it on the cookie sheet. “We grabbed an m! M says /m/.”

The letters on the printables go in order, which is an additional opportunity to explore alphabetical order as well as letter recognition.

You can also match uppercase letters with uppercase magnets, or for a bit of a challenge you can pull out the uppercase printable and use lowercase magnets for an uppercase and lowercase matching game.

This is a bit trickier as once they pull a lowercase magnet, they are hunting for its uppercase match, which doesn’t always look the same!
