Watermelon Fine Motor and Counting Activity

These watermelon counting cards are easy to make with just a few, simple materials. Let’s get started!

Supplies Needed:

  • Green paper plates (or paint/color white ones green)
  • Red paper
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Hole punch

Teacher Tip: The thinner the plate, the better. Regular white paper plates that have been colored or painted green work great! Thicker plates can be difficult for kids to punch through.

For this counting activity, you will need green paper plates, red paper, scissors, a hole punch, glue, and a marker.

To prep this counting activity, begin by cutting circles from the red paper. These circles should be big enough to fill the entire middle area of the plates.

Then, glue the circles to the centers of the plates and cut the plates into quarters or halves.

Use a marker to write numbers on each card and draw the corresponding number of “seeds.”

Make sure to draw the seeds in reach of the punch, even if the child must turn the card a little bit.

Once the cards are ready, the kids can pick a watermelon card and punch out each “seed” while counting.

This is a very good exercise to strengthen the hand muscles, and kids LOVE using hole punches.

After the seeds are punched out, you can reuse this counting activity by using small black pompoms, buttons, or real watermelon seeds for counting.

Using jumbo tweezers, add these small objects onto the punched holes for extra fine motor practice together with counting!
