Kindergarten Planet and I are excited to share a round up of holiday and seasonal books! I am choosing to share with you some of my favorite seasonal books for kids! These books make great additions to any home or classroom library, and don’t necessarily reflect specific holidays. There are even some I just recently discovered and love, so read on for some books to add to your collection this year!

Seasonal Books for Kids
Fall
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves! By Lucille Colandro
The There Was an Old Lady series is seriously so fun, and always a classroom hit! In this hilarious edition – the old lady is swallowing all sorts of fall items – not just leaves! What happens when she swallows pumpkins, leaves, clothes, and even a scarecrow? These stories always make my students laugh – that is why they are some of my favorites!
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert
The watercolor and mixed images make this story incredibly beautiful and captivating. This story tells the life of a tree, beginning when it was just a seed. It is informative with facts for children about trees and seasons, and at the end it gives a fun recipe for a bird treat they can make as well!
Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie by Jill Esbaum
This book is part of the Picture the Seasons series, and I love it because of its real life pictures and information that it provides to students. This story takes you through the life of a pumpkin, with images that many kids can relate to like picking pumpkins, or eating pumpkin pie. If they have never done any of those things then this is a great read aloud for if you bring an actual pumpkin to school for students to explore. How fun is that?
Winter
Winter Lullaby by Barbara Seuling
Winter Lullaby tells the story of how animals adapt when winter comes. With beautiful illustrations and clear language for early readers, this story is a must for winter. My students always love to read and learn about animals, and this book asks and answers many questions about what happens to animals when the seasons change.
When it Starts to Snow by Phyllis Gershator
This is another book that tells the stories of where animals go in the winter. With the idea of “If it starts to snow, where do you go?” readers are taken on a journey to learn where each animal will find shelter in the snow. There is one animal, however, who won’t take cover in its own special home – who will it be?
Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner
Snowmen are so fun to think about when you are a child (even an adult too!) and this book is such a fun story that tells of what snowmen do at night. After all, they sometimes look different the morning after they are created! This creative story is a favorite every year, especially before winter-themed crafts or snowmen making!
Ten Grouchy Groundhogs by Kathryn Heling
This was a new discovery for me, and I can’t believe I didn’t know of it sooner! I love counting books, as do my students, and this book counts down in a fun, rhyming way! With hilarious words and a fun rhythm, this grouchy groundhog story is one to look forward to!
Spring
Split! Splat! by Amy Gibson
We get a lot of rain in the spring in our area – so this one is so relatable for my students! A little girl and her dog go out on a rainy day for an adventure! With fun rhymes and onomatopoeia, this book is a must to kick off spring!
Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson
Fletcher loves spring – he loves everything about it! The flowers and the butterflies… but, why is it snowing? Fletcher thinks that the blossoms in the air are snow! This is a fun story to share the sights of spring with a fun character like Fletcher.
Summer
The Ice Cream King by Steve Metzger
Who doesn’t love ice cream? Ice cream is instantly relatable to summer, and anything with a king makes a child instantly curious. Teddy is a young boy who goes to visit the ice cream shop when magically he is in a land that is ALL ice cream! Teddy begins to rule this land as the Ice Cream King who can eat as much ice cream as he wants! This story also has a lesson in sharing, which is great for young readers.
The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli
I have honestly had so many children ask me if they will grow something in their stomach if they swallow a seed – it is too funny! So this story is a must read for the summer months! This crocodile has a huge fear of swallowing a watermelon seed. What will happen to him when he does – will he sprout vines? Will he turn pink? This fun, hilarious story is one that kids love!
