To me, a “new year” begins in August (teacher brain) as I tend to think in the cycle of a school year. However, as we know, the true New Year is in January when we are returning back to school after our holiday break. This can be confusing to young kids. New Year? Things feel the same! These New Year’s Writing Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten are perfect to have prepped and ready to go for when you get back after the holiday break to ring in the New Year with your students!

New Year’s Writing Activities and Centers
We start using our writing centers early in the year so by New Year’s we have all of the routines and structure of the centers down! This allows students to really focus on the writing and vocabulary for each new theme, and allows me to focus more on teaching and not repeatedly giving directions – which makes it a win-win for everyone!
For these New Year’s writing centers, students will be introduced to the following vocabulary words: party horn, clock, countdown, party hat, balloons, confetti, fireworks, and black-eyed peas.
The included vocabulary cards come 4 to a page (8 words total) and are a great size to accompany all the activities. Be sure to laminate them ahead of time for durability and reuse!
Let’s check out some of the fun activities included!
Trace and Paste Printable
Work on writing and scissor skills too with the Trace and Paste! printable. This activity is fun, hands-on, and it gives students lots of practice with a glue stick too!
Kids trace the words and then cut and paste their matching pictures next to them (using the word cards to help them if needed).
“Write the Room” Activity
This New Year’s “Write the Room” is one of our favorite activities to use with the vocabulary cards! It is like a traditional “Write the Room” activity, but you can choose how you use it with your students because it’s so versatile.
You can post the cards around the room (they love this!) or you can also put them in a sensory bin. My kids are even happy to just have them scattered on a table to copy.
However you decide to use this activity, it’s sure to be a hit!
Write It! Strips
Dry erase markers add an extra level of engagement to the simplest activities so if you add these vocabulary strips to your writing centers your students will be so excited!
Just print the strips, laminate them, and then add them to your centers with the vocabulary cards. Your students can write, erase, and write again for tons of New Year’s-themed writing fun!
New Year’s Story Book
The simple and fun story book is great for a continued project or themed journal. You could even send it home for kids to work on writing with their families!
You can print the pages double-sided and use the cover page to create a journal, or just use single pages as writing prompts in your writing centers if you prefer.
The goal is for kids to write a few sentences or a short story about the picture.
There are even more fun writing activities in this pack including a Mini “Write It!” book!
Plus, at the end of the file, all of the color items also come in black and white for an ink-saving option!
