This Lucky Gold Coin Addition Activity is simple to set up and would make a fun, hands-on math station for Kindergarten!

Lucky Gold Coin Addition Activity

Gold coin addition is not just for St. Patrick’s Day! This would be a great learning activity for Chinese New Year or even Talk Like a Pirate Day!

To set up this engaging and inviting gold coin addition activity, for each station, you will need:

  • At least a dozen (plastic or wooden) gold coins
  • Divided plate or large sheet of paper with 3 large sections drawn out
  • 1 dice
  • Pencil
  • Paper

How to Play

To play, invite students to roll the dice, and place the corresponding number of coins into one section of the plate. Students can write the number on a sheet of paper or a mini whiteboard.

Next, students can roll the dice a second time, and place the number of coins into a different plate section. For this part, the students would add a “+” sign to the right of the first number before writing the second number.

Invite the students to count up the total number of coins on the plate to solve the addition problem and write the final answer on their paper or whiteboard.

Repeat the process to create and solve more addition problems!

Use a divided plate to place your gold coins while adding them!

This gold coin addition activity can be played independently OR in teams with one student rolling the dice, one counting the gold coins, and one writing down the problems/answers. The students can take turns switching roles until everyone has a chance to complete each role!
