Building up our number sense is something we work hard on all year long, and I am always on the lookout for fun manipulatives to help us. When I found these super fun heart beads at the Target dollar spot (or you can use other heart beads if your Target doesn’t have any) I knew they would be so much fun for a hands-on Valentine’s themed math center. These “love monster” addition to 10 cards (grab our subtraction set too!) are great for counting, one to one correspondence, and building up an understanding of addition facts to 10 with the help of ten frames.
Love Monster Addition to 10 Cards
After I printed out these fun and lovable monster cards, I laminated them and cut them apart for our math bins.
I placed them, along with a small container of beads on a table for small groups to work on building and solving their equations during math workshop.
I love these heart beads not only for their festive Valentine’s Day feel, but because of the fine motor work they give my kids too as they pick them up one by one to place them in the ten frame.
They first picked up a card and read the equation, and then it was time to count up some hearts and build it!
3 red hearts plus 3 pink hearts equals 6 hearts. This also really gives a good visual of the equation too, so I didn’t mind when they were digging through the beads to look for more of a certain color!
They kept picking up cards and building equations until that round of math workshop was over. Then we cleaned up, and played again later!
