Recently, we’ve been taking the time to soak up the sun and do lots of exploring outside. With outdoor exploring comes BUGS! My students have a fascination with nature and all things crawly so I decided to incorporate this subject into our math and literacy centers. These Insect Activities and Centers for Pre-K & Kindergarten will bring the cute, crawly fun into the classroom while keeping the real bugs outside (which I prefer!).

Whether you are working on an insect unit or your kiddos just love creatures with lots of legs, these insect centers are sure to be a hit!
Check out a few of the activities in this insect-themed resource pack below…
Bug Spot Counting Mats
Practice counting to 20 with these fun Bug Spot Counting Mats. The students use playdough, or any manipulative you have on hand, to make “spots” on the insects by reading the number on the mat.
These counting mats also include a sentence below the bug with the number word for extra practice!
Syllable Snails
Counting syllables is a skill that we practice a lot in Kindergarten. Your students will love this Syllable Snails sorting activity!
The kids pick a snail picture card and add it to the column with the correct number of syllables on the recording sheet. Laminate the picture cards and recording sheet to make this activity durable and reusable for your literacy centers.
Grasshopper Before and After
Clip cards are always a hit in my classroom and these Grasshopper Before and After cards are no exception.
For these number order clip cards, kids pick a card and use a clothespin to clip the number that takes the place of the grasshopper. Your students will have a blast identifying what number comes before or after in the series while strengthening fine motor skills.
Swat the Sight Words
In this hands-on Swat the Sight Words matching game, students match up the fly swatter sight words to their flies.
This activity also includes an optional recording sheet for students to write the sight words after they find a match. This is great writing practice and an extra challenge for students that are ready!
