December is my favorite time of year to bring in holiday themed projects and activities! This gingerbread village cardboard collage is a fun and festive way to welcome the holiday season in your home or classroom. Depending on the grade level, you could easily modify this project to be as simple or complex as you would like. Let’s get started with this fun Gingerbread House Craft for Kids!

Gingerbread House Craft for Kids
Your students will be so excited to create their very own, unique cardboard gingerbread village collage! While making their village, they will have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials. This is a great project for introducing warm versus cool colors, and working on fine motor skills!
Supplies Needed
To make this gingerbread house craft, you will need:
- watercolor paper
- watercolor paints
- paintbrushes
- school glue
- white gel pens
- cardboard (empty cereal boxes work well for this!)
- foil star stickers (optional)
How to Make Your Gingerbread Cardboard Village
To begin, invite your students to paint the background of their collages with watercolor paints.
This is a great opportunity to discuss warm versus cool colors. You can encourage students to use a cool color palette of blues and purples to create this winter scene.
Allow the paint to dry completely.
For younger students, cardboard can be cut up into shapes ahead of time. Otherwise, invite students to cut the cardboard into shapes to form the gingerbread houses.
Next, students can experiment with layout designs before gluing the cardboard pieces to the background.
Once the glue has dried completely, it is time for the students to use white gel pens to add all the fun details onto the houses!
For inspiration, you may want to review a few examples of a variety of styles for windows, roofs, and doors. Illustrations from books or magazines can be quite helpful for gathering ideas!
Finally, students can add some silver or gold foil star stickers to the sky, or use the white gel pens to add snowflakes to the background.
This gingerbread house craft for kids is so much fun to make! Wouldn’t this Gingerbread Cardboard Village look festive on display in your home or classroom?
