Brrr-ing on the mittens and scarves because winter is here! When it’s too cold to go outside, we have to work a little harder to keep our students from going stir crazy indoors. We can accomplish this with engaging and fun winter-themed learning activities like this free Editable Winter Sight Word Activity. It’ll be a hit in your classroom all season long!

Editable Winter Sight Word Activity
My absolute favorite thing about this literacy activity is that it is EDITABLE! That means you get to choose any 15 words that you’d like your students to focus on.
Simply type the words of your choice into the custom word generator and it will auto-populate the sight words onto the mitten cards and recording sheet for you!
That also makes this activity perfect for Pre-K through 1st grade since you can customize the words to the level of your own class.
Ways to Use this Activity
The possibilities are endless when the activity is editable! You can choose to have your students practice winter-themed words, spelling words, high-frequency words, Dolch Words, sight words, etc.
You could also choose to print different word lists for your small groups so that you can focus on a customized set of words for each group of kiddos.
Below are some of my favorite ways to use this Seek a Sight Word Activity in the classroom!
Start by printing, laminating, and cutting apart the sight word mitten cards. Place the Seek a Sight Word recording sheet and mitten cards in your literacy centers with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
To play, students pick a sight word mitten card from the pile, read it, and find it on the recording sheet. Once they find the matching mitten on the page they can color it in.
The activity continues until all of the sight word mitten cards have been read and their matching mittens have been colored in.

This variation is played similarly but in pairs. Two players share a recording sheet and each picks one color crayon or marker that is their designated color.
Player #1 draws a card, reads the sight word, and finds and colors the matching mitten on the recording sheet. Player #2 then proceeds as player #1 did.
If a player doesn’t know the sight word, they must put the card at the bottom of the pile and they miss their turn. The player with the most sight word mittens colored at the end of the game is the winner!
Fun Tip: Switch up this sight word activity by giving your kids fun manipulatives to “cover up” the sight word mittens on the recording sheet instead of coloring.
Read the Room
Begin by posting the sight word mitten cards around the classroom. Add the recording sheet to a clipboard and students can color in the mittens as they find their matches.
If this activity is used in pairs, one child can hide the words around the classroom, and then his/her partner can search for them.
Students then switch so each child has a turn to hide AND seek.
Teacher Tip: Save paper and ink by slipping the recording sheet into a dry erase pocket sleeve. Your students will love coloring in their mittens with dry erase markers!
No matter how you choose to play, your students will love reading and coloring sight words all winter!
