Nursery rhymes are so much fun. Not only are they silly songs that students love to sing, they actually offer practice on a variety of important skills for your students. I absolutely love including nursery rhymes in my lessons. That’s why I created these video lessons for teaching with nursery rhymes!

These video lessons for teaching with nursery rhymes add tons of fun to your lessons while also offering great practice with rhyming words!

Teaching with Nursery Rhymes

I love teaching with nursery rhymes in the classroom. They offer great practice with rhyming words and allow us to talk about new vocabulary. The songs are super fun to sing, and we use hand motions while we sing the songs, which strengthens our fine motor skills.

One of the ways I like to teach nursery rhymes is with picture cards! Some of the words and phrases in nursery rhymes are not normal words Pre-K or Kindergarten students would know. So having pictures to help them remember the story is very helpful!

After they practice the nursery rhyme a few times and learn the song in whole group, they are ready to continue practicing in a small group or center.

The picture cards can be used to retell the story. Plus, students can use any of our nursery rhyme emergent readers to extend practice at school or at home.

As part of the Lesson Lab over in the Print and Play Club, we have a growing library of video lessons for teaching with nursery rhymes and so much more! From old classics like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or The Itsy Bitsy Spider, to some new favorites like I’m a Little Snowman, the Lesson Lab is full of nursery rhyme fun!
