This craft is definitely one of our more advanced crafts – kids need to use their fine motor skills and finger muscles to work the pipe cleaners through the muffin liners and cardstock.

If your kids are not quite there, you can pre-punch some holes into the muffin liners and paper vase – or just have them glue the paper liners and pipe cleaners onto the vase.

This craft was inspired by our Fine Motor Spring Flowers that we made a couple of years ago and are still decorating my bookshelf. If your kids fill up their “vases” and still want to make more flowers, an actual vase full of these beauties is a fun addition to your home or classroom.

Letter V Craft – V is for Vase Craft

First, gather your materials:

Using the scissors, prepare the shapes needed for making your vase letter craft – each child will need:

  • 1 letter “V”
  • A triangle the same size as the V

Cut the green pipe cleaners in half or thirds.

Provide each child with a “V” cut-out, triangle, 2-3 pipe cleaners, and a few muffin liners (they can add more than one muffin liner to each pipe cleaner if they desire).

My kids were all so excited to make their “vases of flowers” and despite it being a slightly more challenging letter craft than our previous ones, they weren’t phased by the level of difficulty at all because they were so excited.

First, have the children glue their “V” on top of the triangle to serve as your vase.

Then, have them start assembling their flowers. They can either poke the pipe cleaners through the muffin liners to form the flowers and then poke them through the paper vase, or they can glue the pipe cleaners and liners onto the vase.

(The second option is a lot easier, but my kids mostly enjoyed the challenge of poking the pipe cleaner through the paper.)

As you can see, this was great for teaching fine motor control and really working on those finger muscles in a concentrated way.

The kids also really had to use their pincer grips for this craft because of the materials, so it was good for strengthening that because it is essential for later writing work.

As always, I wasn’t particular about where the kids placed their flowers or if they assembled their crafts the way I had planned. No matter what they create, they are still familiarizing themselves with the letter v’s shape and sound and getting excited about letters.
