Unicorns always provide magical fun, and they capture the interest of my students as well. This colorful unicorn CVC word match was the perfect literacy activity to boost our practice with CVC words in a fun, game-like way!
Unicorn CVC Word Match
Prepping this fun activity was fairly quick (the only slower part is laminating) which makes it nice when you are short on time, but want an activity that will last and can be played over and over again.
I first printed out the pages of CVC word unicorns, along with their CVC picture rainbows.
There are 15 matches in all – 3 for each vowel a, e, i, o, and u.
Then I laminated them, and cut them apart on the solid black lines to have the pieces all set for a matching game.
I first played the game with a small group, and we tackled all of the matches.
Depending on your students, you may choose to work on only one vowel at a time, or remove some cards so that it isn’t overwhelming.
We spread out the picture rainbows face up, and then drew a unicorn card to read the CVC word, practicing our reading skills by stretching out each sound.
“/d/o/g/” – when we figured out the word, we found its match and placed the unicorn with its matching rainbow!
We kept reading and matching up unicorns until all of the words had been paired up.
