Treasure Chest Math Facts Game

We work hard on both addition and subtraction all year, but it’s still sometimes tricky for kids to distinguish between the two when presented with mixed equations.

What I love most about this sorting activity is that not only are they solving facts, but they really have to think about what strategies to use and what type of problem they are solving.

How to Prep

Getting this math facts game ready for my pirate fans and treasure hunters was simple (which is always a plus in my book!).

I first printed out the treasure chest mats from 1-10 as well as the coin equations on cardstock. Then I laminated them so that I could use them multiple times. Lastly, I cut apart the treasure chest mats and the coins and placed them into 2 separate baskets in our math centers.

You could cut all the way around the coins to give them a more “coin-like” feel, but I find that it’s easier for little fingers to grasp the square cards, and then they also stay a little sturdier that way.

I cut the coins into little squares because it makes them easier for little hands to pick up.

How to Play

In our small groups, I started by laying out the treasure chest mats in order from 1-10. We dove into the basket of coins to pull out some facts and got to work!

We pulled a coin, solved the equation, and placed it on the correct treasure chest based on its answer.

Together, we kept pulling coins, solving the equations, and matching the coins with their correct treasure chest until we completed them all.

You could play with all coins and treasure chests to work on facts within 10, or you could work only on facts within 5, depending on what your kids’ levels are and what they are needing.

The coins include both addition and subtraction facts to 10. Kids can sort them into their number treasure boxes.

As another option, you could use just the addition or just the subtraction coins if your kids are not quite ready for the mixed equations.
