Understanding the concept of subtraction and becoming familiar with beginning subtraction facts is an important skill for early learners. It is something that has to be modeled and practiced frequently. These Subtraction Activities and Centers will be a great addition to your Pre-K and Kindergarten classroom. Your students will love mastering their subtraction skills!
Subtraction Activities and Centers
Subtraction has to be modeled repeatedly for young students. It is important that children understand what is happening when something is being subtracted, instead of just memorizing facts.
That’s why subtraction in Pre-K and Kindergarten needs to be so hands-on. It’s important that students really explore the concept. This deeper understanding will benefit children’s ability to reason and understand things like word problems and other related concepts down the road.
The activities in this resource pack are designed to get your students thinking about the concept of subtraction as well as beginning subtraction facts.
This resource is full of activities to help your students with subtraction within 5 and 10. Students will model and build subtraction problems with manipulatives and ten frames, and answer subtraction problems. With 175 pages of activities that are low-prep for you and super fun for your students, you will love this resource!
These activities are NOT themed to any specific holiday or month, so you can use them any time of the year!
But if you’re looking for themed centers to add to your teacher toolbox, I have a great bundle of Themed Math and Literacy Centers that you will love!
Check out a few of the activities in this subtraction resource pack below…
Subtraction Pocket Chart Sort
I love this pocket chart activity because it is so versatile! Of course you can use it during circle time, but you can also use it in small groups or in centers!
Students will put the candy jar numbers on the pocket chart and sort the subtraction fact candies next to the correct jar.
Another way to play is to choose one candy jar number and have students find all of the subtraction problems with that answer.
Scoopin’ Up Subtraction
Who doesn’t love ice cream? My students love to work on their subtraction skills with this fun and simple “Scoopin’ Up” activity.
Children will use the ice cream scoop cards and ice cream bowl work mat to model subtraction equations. Then they can write their answers on the ice cream scoops recording sheet!
This activity is a great, hands-on way to model the concept of subtraction!
Cookie Subtraction Mats
Your students will love this engaging subtraction activity… but it might make them hungry! This super cute, low-prep resource will have your kiddos building subtraction problems and recording the answers.
I like to laminate the cookie sheet subtraction mats and the cookie cards so they are a little more sturdy, and they last for years!
Students will use the cookies to model the problem on the cookie sheet subtraction mat and write the answer to the problem.
