Option 1: Sorting Center

Spread the leprechaun spelling patterns out on the floor or on a large table. Leave enough space for the word cards to be sorted under each spelling pattern. Each spelling pattern has 6 word cards.

In small groups, students will choose a word card. Then they will read it and decide which long e spelling pattern each word uses. Then they will sort it into the correct category.

Once all of the words are sorted, they will choose 3 words from each spelling pattern to write on their recording sheet. They also get to practice using two of the words in a sentence.

Option 2: Read and Write the Room

You can also use this resource as a whole group read and write the room activity. Use tape to place the word cards on the walls, on desks, on the backs of chairs, and in other easily noticeable places around the room.

Then give each of your students a clipboard, pencil, and their recording sheet. Then they go on a little “hunt” around the room to find words to write for each long e spelling pattern.

After they are finished, you can gather the group together to check answers. Hang the leprechaun spelling patterns on the board.

Then call on one student at a time to go find a word from around the room and hang it under the correct spelling pattern. Then have the class read the word out loud together.

This is a great way for them to check their answers, and it also gives them another opportunity to read the words.
