Spring CVC Word Puzzles

Spring is finally in the air! Today I am going to share a fun game to practice reading CVC words with spring-themed pictures! One of the most popular activities in my classroom is puzzles because the kids love putting them together to reveal the pictures. These free Spring CVC Word Puzzles have students practice making CVC words by putting mini puzzles together. They work great as a center activity, for small group practice, or even as a quick informal assessment!

Spring CVC Word Puzzles
Prep for this activity is easy and if you laminate the puzzles before cutting them apart you can prep them once and reuse them year after year!
Start by printing out the CVC word puzzles and matching recording sheet (at the end of the post). Laminate the puzzles and then cut them out along the vertical lines.
Now it’s time for your students to enjoy!
How to Play
First, students will be given all the puzzle pieces and a recording sheet to write the words down.
They will look for matching puzzle pieces that make up a whole picture. I like to show them that the recording sheet has all the complete pictures to help them if they need it.
Students will put the puzzles together to show the complete pictures. Then, they will read the CVC words at the bottom.

Lastly, have the students write each word next to the picture on the recording sheet.
For example, the frog puzzle has the letters “t…a…g” at the bottom. After completing the puzzle, the students find the frog picture on the recording sheet and write the word “tag” in the boxes.
Students continue until all the puzzles are put together and the recording sheet is filled out. They can even color the pictures on the recording sheet if there’s time!
Sometimes I like to use these puzzles as a center activity on the carpet and let my kiddos use a clipboard for the recording sheet.
The recording sheet is optional, but I like to use it if the kids are doing this activity independently. It holds them accountable to put the puzzles together and also has them practice writing the CVC words.
