Shark Family SH Hunt Digraph Activity

Each shark family member is hunting for a different word beginning with the digraph SH.

Daddy shark is looking for a sheep, and brother is trying to find a ship. Mommy shark is hunting for a shake (a shamrock one!), while sister is after a shell. You’ll also find a grandma and grandpa shark in this fun little free printable set.

Sh Digraph Sensory Bin

You can set this activity up in a small sensory bin. I used a plastic dishpan and dyed rice which I had saved from our alphabet fish sensory bin. The rice has an engaging kinetic appeal – much more enticing than just laying cards out on a table to match together.

You can add an additional element of play by also including small plastic sharks and other sea creatures.

Let each child explore the shark bin freely at first. They can bury the cards themselves, and mix up the rice, readying it for an SH word shark hunt.

SH Digraph Matching Activity

The basic activity is matching each of the six sharks with a specific SH word. Students will search for each pair in the bin.

For students who are ready for more of a challenge, I’ve also included some decoy words (see that sneaky snake!) and words without pictures. Mix these into the bin as well to raise the difficulty level.

If you need to hold students accountable, there’s a recording sheet as well. Students can write each word as they match that pair, and then they can write any other SH words they find on the blank lines.
