Fall is just around the corner, and that usually means I am ready to pull out some pumpkin learning activities in my classroom as we transition into the new season! My kids can always use a little more practice with rhyming as beginning readers. It can be tricky to identify rhymes, but being able to identify whether or not words rhyme will help them as they continue to grow and work with spoken and written language. These free Pumpkin Rhyming Puzzles are a fun and low-prep literacy center for Pre-K and Kindergarten students to work on rhymes!

Pumpkin Rhyming Puzzles

I love when I find activities that are hands-on, engaging, and easy to prep! These puzzles are all of those things!

To prep, I simply printed out the puzzles on cardstock for durability and laminated them for reuse. Then I cut them apart and placed them in a small basket to use with a small group or add to our literacy centers.

How to Play

First we spread out all of the pieces by sorting them with seeds on one side and pumpkins on the other since we knew we would be making matches.

Then we took turns picking a seed card and saying the name of the picture on the card.

Next, we would search for the pumpkin card with a picture that rhymed with the picture on our seed card. I know it may seem obvious for some kids (and it was) but for others it was tricky. Sometimes you may find that students mistakenly identifying same beginning sounds as rhymes.

When we found the correct answer we put the pieces together!

These puzzles make a great partner game, independent center, or you could even use the rhyming puzzles in a pocket chart to have kids come up and make a match during Circle Time!
