I love to teach my students about life cycles at different times throughout the year! In the fall we learn about a pumpkin’s stages of life and in the spring we dive into the life cycles of some common (and popular) insects like ladybugs and butterflies. These printable Life Cycle Emergent Readers are the perfect way to introduce life cycles in Pre-K and Kindergarten. They are easy to prep and your students will love the fun facts and pictures included in each book!

*You can grab these fun emergent readers right now in our shop, or hop on over to purchase them on Teachers Pay Teachers!

These printable Life Cycle Emergent Readers are the perfect way to introduce life cycles in Pre-K and Kindergarten!

Printable Life Cycle Emergent Readers

Are you needing emergent readers for Pre-K? How about Kindergarten? For each life cycle, we have included 2 levels of books making this resource pack perfect for both!

The books are super easy to prepare! Just print double-sided, cut in half, staple, and voila – you have two books ready to go! This is great for saving paper. If you’re using them at home, it means there is an extra copy for you to follow along with.

What’s Included?

This life cycle reader pack contains 14 books (2 for each life cycle) that your kids will love. They are great for classroom books, guided reading groups, independent reading, at-home practice, and more!

This life cycle reader pack contains 14 books (2 for each life cycle) that your kids will love.

The following life cycle readers are included in this collection:

  • Bean
  • Butterfly
  • Chicken
  • Frog
  • Grasshopper
  • Ladybug
  • Pumpkin
One of the emergent readers included is for the life cycle of a bean.

How to Use the Life Cycle Readers

These emergent readers are a great way to teach students about a variety of life cycles including animals, insects, and plants. My favorite way to use them is in small groups. First, I introduce the subject to the whole class. The kids really light up when it is a favorite bug or animal. Butterflies and frogs are always a hit!

After we discuss the animal, plant, or insect I like to work with my students in our guided reading groups so we can practice any tricky or unfamiliar words that we find. Often, words specific to each life cycle are not common words for Pre-K or Kindergarten students so taking the time to read through the books together is extra helpful.

The books include fun pictures for each life cycle topic that students can color.

Sometimes we go through and highlight or underline the new words that we find. The simple and fun pictures are also great tools for helping students if they get stuck on a word.

Working in small groups also allows me to pick which level of printable reader is best for each group. I may use the first reader with simple sentences or if the kiddos are ready for a challenge, I can use the second reader!

This pack includes emergent readers that focus on pumpkins, grasshoppers, chickens, and more.

When we finish reading the books the students color them independently and take them home to proudly show off and share their favorite life cycle facts at home!
