These free Pirate Beginning Sounds Clip Cards are the perfect solution to helping my son work on a few of his phonics skills – mainly listening for beginning sounds in words. They are colorful enough to grab his attention and of course, what kid will resist pirates?

Clip cards seem to be a hit in our house especially since my son finally has the strength in his little fingers to use clothespins! Do you know what that means? It means zero meltdowns and his fine motor skills are developing! However, if your kids struggle with using clothespins, don’t forget that you can simply use counters.

To get ready, I first printed out the cards (below) on cardstock. If you intend to reuse these (and you should) then simply laminated them. After I cut them apart, I placed them in a basket and grabbed a few clothespins for identifying the answer and for counting.

First I picked up a card from the basket and asked him to identify the object. We then repeated the word and identified the beginning sound together. I chose to do this as he is still developing this skill and so I find that if I slow down and segment the words, he is able to identify the beginning sound fairly easily.

Once we identified the answer, he placed a clothespin on the correct sound. (Note, he wouldn’t stay still for me to take a picture so luckily his big sister helped)

We continued until we completed all of the clip cards. We loved this activity and you will too!
