Pencil Count and Clip Cards
This printable set includes clip cards featuring the numbers 1-10. Each card has a group of different numbered smiley pencils on it.
Simply print the count and clip cards and cut them apart on the light gray dotted lines. Laminate your set or print on white cardstock for extra durability.
Now gather a set of clothespins. My preschoolers prefer to have the same amount of clothespins as cards. Put the cards and clothespins in a small basket or tray for individual or small group use.
Now that the clip cards are prepped, it’s time to start counting!
Count each pencil on the card and find the correct number to the side. Use the clothespin to mark the correct number. When of the cards are complete, remove the clothespins and play again!
To make the cards self-correcting, write the correct answer in pencil on the back of the card. This helps make the activity more independent, especially if you are not able to sit there while it’s being played.
For learners who are working on one-to-one correspondence, make sure that each pencil on the cards is touched or pointed to as it is counted.

With activities like these count and clip cards, I prefer to introduce them during circle time. This allows me to give opportunities to let students get a little extra practice who are having a tough time with a certain skill.
It also is a great time to show non-examples to the class to make sure that they are understanding the correct goal of the activity.
