Paper Fan Watermelon Craft and Counting Activity

This paper fan watermelon craft and watermelon-themed Find & Count are both great for the kids to do indoors when it’s too hot to go outside. They also pair perfectly with the book, The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli. We love to read the book aloud before we start crafting and counting!

How to Assemble the Watermelon Craft for Kids

Supplies Needed:

Begin by flipping the paper plate over so the bottom is facing up. Then invite your child to paint the center of the plate with pink tempera paint and the rim of the plate with green tempera paint as shown. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Once the paint has dried, invite your child to use a cotton swab dipped in black tempera paint to add the seeds!

Begin by painting the center of the plate pink and the rim of the plate green.
Invite your child to use a cotton swab dipped in black tempera paint to add the seeds.

*Optional: Sneak in some early math skills practice before the Watermelon Find & Count by asking your child to count the number of seeds as they paint.

Open the plate and use masking tape to attach a large craft stick for the handle of the fan. Lastly, adults can use a stapler around the outer rim of the plate to seal the edges of the plate shut.

Fold the plate in half and then open it and attach a large craft stick for the handle of the fan.

Now that you have the perfect way to cool down, it’s time for some movement AND counting fun!

Watermelon Find & Count

The free watermelon-themed counting activity will be a hit with your kiddos since they will get to work on counting skills while getting up out of their seats. This is especially exciting when the heat keeps us from getting our wiggles out outside.

This free download includes the watermelon cards and 4 recording sheets. Recording sheet options include coloring watermelons, coloring in numbers, tracing numbers, and writing numbers. Perfect for differentiation!

Students will find the watermelon cards and write their answers on the recording sheet.

Before you begin this activity with your kiddos, start by hanging the watermelon cards all around the room. Then you can print the recording sheets of your choice, grab some clipboards, and it’s time to play!

The students simply walk around the room finding watermelons, counting the seeds, and recording their answers.

Hang the watermelon cards around the room for students to find and count the seeds.

  2. Yes! I totally love this – and will most definitely try it out with my kids before summer is up! <3 Maybe we can make a snack to go along with it – something to celebrate summer. (Of course, couldn't just be watermelon!) Thanks for the great idea!
