Ocean Alphabet Sensory Writing Tray Activity

I have never been to the beach. Yup, you read that correctly. I have never been to the ocean and I honestly don’t think I want to ever go either. The big never-ending ocean is rather intimidating to this non-swimming mama.

While I don’t care to go to the ocean any time soon, I do love learning about the ocean and think seashells are absolutely beautiful. We love using them for activities so I am thankful for the shells I have acquired from others sharing their collections with me.

How to Prep

This activity is super fun and easy to prep too! Simply start by printing and laminating the seashell letter tracing cards.

You will also need a tray, sand, and seashells. The trays from Melissa and Doug Lacing Cards are perfect for this type of activity, but any tray will work.

Add the sand to the tray and set the shells aside.

How to Play

The simplest way to use the seashell cards is to laminate them and then use a dry erase marker to trace the letters on the cards. This activity would be perfect for morning work or a literacy center.

These cards can also be used for the sensory writing tray!

Students will pick a seashell letter card and lay it beside the tray or in the tray if there is a spot so they can see the letter.

Next, they will use their finger to write the letter on the seashell card in the sand.

Then, the kids can use small seashells to trace the letter drawn in the sand. This part of the activity gives them another hands-on way to practice forming letters!
