The prep is nice and simple.  Just print, and cut your cards apart. If you plan to use them year after year then I recommend printing on card stock and laminating for added durability.

Storage tip:  I like to store each vowel set in its own gallon baggie so that they are ready to use without sorting through all of the cards.

How to Play

Before splitting them into small groups, I love to do a whole group example so that everyone understands the expectations and goals for the centers.

I start by hanging up the “Long A” and “Short A” sorting signs.

Then I have a student come up and choose a word card.  We read it out loud and as a class decide if it has the long or short “A” sound.  Then we place it under the correct sign.

I continue to bring up helpers until I feel like everyone is ready to try it independently.

Next, I split my class into 5 small groups and give each group a vowel set to sort.

As they are sorting I walk around to check for understanding and offer help when needed.

After the group has successfully sorted all of the cards I have them raise their hands to indicate that it is time for me to come check their answers.

Once I have quickly checked each group’s answers I have them rotate to the next vowel.

By the end of the rotations they will have sorted all 5 vowels.
