Mosaic Art Scissor Skills Activity
This mosaic art project and the cutting jar are my favorite scissor activities because they are easy to prep and kids love them! You might decide to have students tear apart paper with their hands before practicing with scissors. Either way, your students will be strengthening fine motor skills in an engaging way!
Mosaic art is one of my favorite projects to do with my students and it is so simple! BUT… I’m here to teach you what NOT to do when it comes to pulling it off successfully. These steps are sure to help you ensure that this fine motor activity is effective and goes smoothly!
How to Create Mosaic Art
Begin by prepping colored strips of construction paper and half sheets for the “background.” My favorite color to use for the background is black. It really makes the “mosaic” pop!
Give students only a few strips of paper and scissors first. That is all that they need to start. Do NOT give them all of the supplies at once. This is a lesson that I learned the hard way so take it from me!
Once they have torn or cut a pile of “mosaic” pieces, then it is time to give them their glue and background page.
Giving the students the supplies in stages as they need them, helps them to focus on one step at a time. It also prevents them from accidentally cutting their “background” page.

Hang the mosaic art pieces up as a fun display in the classroom or at home! Nothing fancy is needed for these simple and beautiful masterpieces.
PLUS… you can repeat this activity throughout the year to track progress! With consistent practice, you will definitely notice changes in scissor skills and the size of the pieces students cut.
Pair this mosaic art project with the cutting jar for the perfect easy-prep scissor skills center!
