Winter is the perfect time to practice and reinforce pre-writing skills with young learners. Whether you are focusing on correct letter formation or small pencil strokes to write the letters in names or words, our mitten pre-writing alphabet tracing cards can help! Preschoolers and Kindergarteners can practice writing and fine motor skills with this free printable activity.
Mitten Pre-Writing Alphabet Tracing Cards
This printable set includes 26 mitten cards. Each card has a traceable uppercase and lowercase letter of the alphabet on it.
Print the mitten pre-writing alphabet cards and cut them apart on the gray dotted lines. I laminate the cards to keep them sturdy.
If you do not have access to a laminator (this one is great!), use a plastic page protector to make this writing activity reusable.
When the cards are prepped and ready, add them to a basket with dry erase markers and an eraser of some kind.
In my class, we use fancy washcloths that I cut up into smaller squares as erasers. Old socks work too!
I also have found that the black dry erase markers come off easiest on lamination.
Encouraging Pre-Writing Practice
With any activities that involve the alphabet, some of my Pre-k kids feel overwhelmed by the fact that there are 26 choices.
When this happens, I give a specific number to complete or pull out certain letters for each child to work with.
This helps keep the writing activity inviting while giving the kids a realistic chance at reaching their goal.
If some kids are working only on the uppercase letters while fine motor skills are strengthened, put an X through the lowercase letters on the card.
This will help make sure that the correct letter is being traced accurately.
Wearing actual mittens while writing is also a huge hit in my classroom! Add mittens or gloves to this activity for a way to engage kids in a silly way.
