We’re nearing the end of our Kindergarten Letter Crafts collection, and I really wanted to do at least one “collage” piece with the kids, so Y is for Yellow was a perfect fit for an open-ended letter Y craft that each kid could really make their own.
Collages are a fun way to use up leftover bits of craft supplies and also let kids fulfill that desire to load their artwork up with lots of pretty embellishments.
They also provide fun contrasts in texture, shape, and materials for kids to compare and contrast, learning how to shift how they are working with one material in order to get the results they want from the next.
Letter Y Craft – Y is for Yellow Craft
First, gather your materials:
- Yellow cardstock
- Glue sticks
- Scissors (for the teacher/parent)
- Lots of yellow craft supplies – yarn, pom poms, etc.
Using the scissors, cut out several yellow Y shapes.
Provide the children with a “Y” and set the assorted yellow craft supplies out along with the glue sticks or school glue.
My kids had so much fun decorating their Yellow Y’s and comparing the different materials available. There really were no rules to this craft other than sharing the materials and not taking all of anything – an easy way to reinforce this would be to ensure that there are multiples of everything or at least “equally good treasures” to be found in the assortment of supplies offered.
Our Y is for Yellow was a fun step into the world of collages and I think my kids and I will be experimenting with more collages in the near future!
