Use these initial sound earmuff printables to practice alphabet matching! These free winter alphabet printables are great for teaching letters and sounds.

Winter is here!  Well, winter weather never shows up where I live, but that does not stop my youngest from needing all of the winter accessories in the stores!  Creating a learning activity with her favorite winter accessory seemed like the perfect way to get some extra practice with letter sounds.  She is loving wearing her earmuffs while playing the initial sound earmuff alphabet match game.

Initial Sound Earmuff Alphabet Matching

This printable set includes 26 cute earmuffs.  On each side of the earmuff there is a letter of the alphabet and an image.  The image’s initial sound corresponds with the letter on the other side of the earmuff.

Print the file below, on card stock for best results.  Cut the earmuffs apart on the dotted lines.  Then cut each earmuff in half on the black line down the middle.  If you are laminating the game, laminate first and then cut down the middle.  This way the pieces match up perfectly.

I love using learning activities like this with my preschoolers.  Obviously not all of my preschoolers are recognizing letters, but with the way we play it doesn’t matter.  They are focusing on identifying and matching.

In my classroom, I have 2 copies of the initial sound earmuffs printed.  I only cut apart one set.  The goal of my 3 and 4 year-olds is to match the earmuff pieces to the set that has not been cut apart.  They lay the pieces on top of the earmuffs.

The initial sound earmuff alphabet match game can also be played the more classic way that the photos show.

The goal is to match the left side of the earmuff with the letter on it to the right side of the earmuff with the correct image on it.  My youngest loves to spread the pieces across the table.  She lines up the letters in alphabetical order.  Then she goes through and one by one finds the image with the initial sound that matches the letters.
