Learning new patterns in words takes time and practice, so why not make it fun? We have been working on “magic e” words, or CVCe words with these fun and free Ice Cream CVCe puzzles. I knew these puzzles would be a hit to add to our summer-themed collection of activities in our literacy centers!

Ice Cream CVCe Puzzles
After mastering CVC words, we have been tackling what are sometimes referred to as “magic e” or “super e” words. These are CVCe (consonant, vowel, consonant, e) words where the ‘e’ at the end makes the vowel long.
There are 12 CVCe word cones – 3 each for vowels a, i, o, and u. There are not many CVCe words with e, so it is not included.

How to Play
After cutting apart all of the pieces, I set this game up for a small group literacy activity.
I placed the cones in one pile to draw from and the scoops I spread out so that we could see all 12 at once.
We took turns picking up a cone and reading the word together, helping each other as needed. Then, we hunted for the matching scoop.
We kept playing until all word cones and ice cream pictures had been matched!
When we finished, I put the pieces into a zip top bag to save for next time. Since they are laminated, they will last us through tons of play!
