Learning new patterns in words takes time and practice, so why not make it fun? We have been working on “magic e” words, or CVCe words with these fun and perfect for summer ice cream puzzles!
Ice Cream CVCe Puzzles
After mastering CVC words, we have been tackling what are sometimes referred to as “magic e” or “super e” words. These are CVCe (consonant, vowel, consonant, e) words, where the e at the end makes the vowel long.
I knew these puzzles would be a hit to add to our collection of learning activities! I printed them out and laminated them for durability. Then I cut out the cone pieces and all of the scoops.
There are 12 CVCe word cones, 3 each for vowels a, i, o, and u. There are not many CVCe words with e, so it is not included.
After cutting apart all of the pieces, I set this up for a small group literacy activity. We placed the cones in one pile to draw from, and the scoops we spread out so that we could see all 12 at once.
We took turns picking up a cone and reading the word together, helping each other as needed. Then, we hunted for the matching scoop.
We kept playing until all words and pictures had been matched!
When we finished, I put the pieces into a zip top bag to save for next time. Since they are laminated, they will last us through tons of play!
